ALEC Honors Congresswoman and ALEC Alumna Victoria Spartz with Prestigious Iron Lady Award

Ukraine’s fight for freedom is a battle for democracies around the world.

Ukrainian-born American Indiana Congresswoman Rallies U.S. Support for Ukrainian Freedom

Atlanta, Ga. –Last night, the American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC) honored Indiana Congresswoman Victoria Spartz with the prestigious Iron Lady Award during a reception in her honor at ALEC’s 49th Annual Meeting in Atlanta, GA. Ukrainian-born Congresswoman Spartz is a champion of freedom and a leading congressional voice supporting Ukraine since the Russian invasion.

Congresswoman Spartz sounded the alarm on the Russian threat in the days leading up to and early on in the war and led the effort in the U.S. House of Representatives to condemn Russian war crimes in Ukraine.

In the early days of the invasion, Spartz declared, “Ukraine’s fight for freedom is a battle for democracies around the world.”

“Growing up in socialist-controlled Ukraine molded my conservative political philosophy that limited government is always better,” Spartz said. “It also gave me an enormous appreciation for freedoms and free enterprise we enjoy as Americans.

I’m humbled to receive the Iron Lady award, and I am proud of my long association with ALEC, a group that shares my passion for limited government, free markets, and federalism.” An ALEC Alumna, Congresswoman Spartz has represented the state of Indiana since 2020 in the U.S. House of Representatives serving as an Indiana State Senator before that. She currently sits on the House Judiciary and Education and Labor committees.

“It has been a pleasure working with Rep. Victoria Spartz during my tenure at ALEC,” said ALEC CEO Lisa B. Nelson. “Just as former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher faced down the communist threat in her day, so has Victoria Spartz in our day. We need more female freedom fighters like Spartz serving in all levels of government. She is a fierce defender of limited governments, free markets and federalism. I know she wants these principles embraced not only in America, but around the world. I can think of no one more deserving of the 2022 Iron Lady Award.”
