The journey begins now! Across the country, the countdown to July 4, 2026—the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence—is underway. This once-in-a-generation milestone is more than a celebration of our past; it’s a movement to shape America’s future.

For ALEC, the Semiquincentennial is a a powerful opportunity to renew our commitment to the principles that built and sustained our republic— federalism, free markets, and limited government.

That’s why we’re launching States 250, a special initiative to honor America’s founding and elevate the essential role of the states in securing our nation’s future. From now through July 2026, States 250 will drive a 15-month engagement campaign showcasing the power of state-led solutions in writing the next great chapter of American governance.

Through strategic programming, dynamic content, and landmark events, ALEC will lead the way—honoring our history and building a stronger, freer future rooted in federalism and freedom.

The American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC) is a proud supporter of the Freedom 250 Network, which brings together partners at home and abroad, including the entire federal government, to honor our Nation’s past and build the Golden Age of Opportunity for the next 250 years.

ALEC Joins Secretary McMahon’s National “America 250 Civics Education Coalition”

The American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC) is excited to announce its partnership in the newly launched America 250 Civics Education Coalition, a nationwide effort led by the U.S. Department of Education, America First Policy Institute (AFPI), Turning Point USA, and more than 40 other national and state-based organizations. Together, the coalition will strengthen civic education, inspire patriotic pride, and prepare Americans of all ages to celebrate the nation’s 250th anniversary in 2026.

“As America prepares to mark 250 years of independence, we must ensure the next generation knows our history and cherishes the liberties secured by the Founders,” said ALEC CEO Lisa B. Nelson. “ALEC is honored to stand alongside Secretary McMahon and our coalition partners to strengthen civics education in classrooms and communities across the nation.”

Celebrating 250 Years: State and Local Spotlights

America’s Semiquincentennial is a moment for every state to shine. As part of ALEC States 250, we’re highlighting how state leaders are commemorating this historic milestone across the country.

In Celebrating 250 Years: State Spotlights, legislators share the resolutions, events, initiatives, and community efforts they are leading to honor America’s founding and future. From local celebrations to major policy initiatives, these stories showcase the pride and innovation happening in every corner of the nation.

ACCE Chair and Putnam County (NY) Executive Kevin Byrne kicked off the 250th celebration with a reading of “Paul Revere’s Ride” in April 2025.

Capstone Event

July 2026 | 53rd ALEC Annual Meeting

States 250 will culminate at the 2026 ALEC Annual Meeting, where we’ll celebrate the leadership of America’s states and unveil a bold vision for the next 250 years of liberty and innovation.
