ALEC Statement on the Attempted Assassination of President Donald J. Trump
Arlington, VA – ALEC CEO Lisa B. Nelson released the following statement after the attempted assassination of President Donald J. Trump on Saturday, July 13th, in Bethel, PA:
Like all Americans, we are profoundly shocked and horrified by the attempted assassination of President Donald J. Trump at his rally last weekend in Pennsylvania. Our hearts go out to the family of firefighter Corey Comperatore, who tragically lost his life while heroically shielding his wife and daughter from the assassin’s fire. His sacrifice and loss will not be forgotten. We extend our deepest gratitude to the members of law enforcement whose swift actions prevented even greater losses from this cowardly act. There is no place for such actions in our society.
While we are passionate in our views and policy solutions for the country, we are reminded that the great democracy left to us by our forefathers will be all but lost if we allow our beliefs to transform into violence. We must cling to the fact that our democracy thrives on the robust exchange of ideas, not on acts of violence and intimidation.
To those injured in the attack, we give you our prayers for a speedy recovery. Though this day will be etched in your memories, it is a day you that will endure and overcome.
And to President Trump, we commend your spirit, strength, and resilience in the face of such an assault. As Teddy Roosevelt said after surviving a similar attack, it takes more than that to kill a Bull Moose.
Godspeed, Mr. President. May your strength continue to inspire and may our nation come together to denounce this savagery and uphold the values that make America great.
