in Leadership and Outstanding Service Award by the American Legislative Exchange Council

Dallas, Texas (August 1, 2014)—Speaker William J. Howell of Virginia received the William J. Raggio Excellence in Leadership and Outstanding Service Award today from the American Legislative Exchange Council at the organization’s 41st Annual Meeting in Dallas, Texas. Speaker Howell received the award for his leadership and dedication to advancing ALEC principles in both Virginia and within the organization.

“ALEC is a great resource for state legislators, and it is an honor to be recognized by ALEC with the Raggio Award,” said Speaker Howell. “Limited government, free markets and federalism principles are the bedrock of our society, and I will work to continue to advance those principles in Virginia and around our nation.”

Speaker Howell was first elected to the Virginia House of Delegates in 1987. In January of 2003, Speaker Howell became the 54th Speaker of the Virginia House of Delegates. In addition to serving as National Chairman of ALEC in 2009, Speaker Howell has sat on the ALEC Board of Directors since 2001.

“Speaker Howell has been a great asset to ALEC and is committed to Jeffersonian principles,” said Iowa Majority Leader Linda Upmeyer, ALEC National Chair. “His leadership within ALEC and Virginia serve as an example for all members of the organization.”

The American Legislative Exchange Council is the country’s largest 501(c)(3) nonpartisan voluntary membership organization of state legislators.
