State Legislator of the Month, January 2024: Alabama Rep. Kenneth Paschal

We proudly announce Alabama Representative Kenneth Paschal as the January 2024 State Legislator of the Month. As a freshman legislator, he joined ALEC and has already become a key leader within his state.

The State Legislator of the Month award highlights successes and acknowledges those who personify the principles at the core of ALEC – limited government, free markets, and federalism.

In a historical election, Paschal began serving in the Alabama House of Representatives in July 2021 and became the first black Republican elected to the legislature in nearly 100 years.

Paschal’s extensive experience and unwavering support for veterans led to his appointment as Vice Chair of the Military and Veterans Affairs Committee in the legislature. He also serves on the Shelby County Legislation Committee and the Education Policy Committee. However, his legacy of service extends far beyond his legislative career.

Hailing from a small Alabama town and serving 21 honorable years in the US Army, where he attained the rank of First Sergeant, he received numerous awards for his dedicated service. Following his military retirement in 2006, he remained actively involved in advocating for families, children, and veterans, serving on boards and assuming roles such as Post Commander of the American Legion.

As an engaged member of ALEC, Paschal utilized various resources to bring an amendment and ultimately sponsor a bill based on ALEC model policy called the Fundamental Parental Rights Statute. This model policy recognizes the fundamental rights of parents and that infringement on these rights should be narrowly tailored to meet a compelling government interest. In 2023, AL HB6, which the Senate unanimously passed, was quickly signed into law by Governor Kay Ivey.

During the 50th ALEC Annual Meeting in Orlando, Florida, Paschal participated in an interview on The Hugh Hewitt Show, where he discussed how he stood by his family, community, God, and country. He also discussed his parental rights legislation.

“I’m very thankful to receive the State Legislator of the Month award for January from ALEC,” Paschal said in a statement. “ALEC is a very important nonpartisan, voluntary membership organization of state legislators dedicated to the principles of limited government, free markets, and federalism. I am honored to be among their membership, partnership, and CHAMPIONSHIP of Parental Rights legislation for the great state of Alabama. I appreciate ALEC’s support.”

Paschal’s leadership within legislative chambers and community initiatives mirrors ALEC’s core values. Also, his commitment to service, integrity, and the betterment of Alabama truly epitomizes exceptional leadership. Congratulations on being named the State Legislator of the Month for January!
