State Legislator of the Month, January 2026: Missouri Rep. Jim Murphy
State Legislator of the Month highlights the success of our members and acknowledges those who personify the core principles of ALEC–limited government, free markets, and federalism.
ALEC is proud to recognize Missouri Rep. Jim Murphy as a State Legislator of the Month. He has served in the Missouri House of Representatives since 2019, representing the 94th District in St. Louis County, and serves as an ALEC State Chair. His leadership reflects a clear understanding that effective policymaking depends not only on ideas but on strong relationships and early collaboration among lawmakers.
Earlier this month, Rep. Murphy hosted one of the first in-state ALEC events of the legislative cycle, where he asked our team to share ALEC’s trusted policy solutions to limit the growth of spending. This convening brought together legislative leadership from both the House and Senate. Engagement of this kind matters: when lawmakers do not connect early in a session, opportunities for coordination are missed, and policy discussions can become fragmented. By bringing colleagues together at the outset, Rep. Murphy establishes a collaborative foundation that supports more informed and effective decision-making throughout the session.
Reflecting on his experience, Rep. Murphy shared:
I have had the privilege of serving in the Missouri House for eight years. Like all legislators, I quickly learned after being elected that there was a great deal to understand. I was fortunate to be introduced to ALEC early in my tenure, and I can say candidly that I would not have been as effective or successful without that involvement. Both I and the people of Missouri have benefited greatly from my association with ALEC, and I consistently encourage my colleagues to become members. Any recognition I have received is due to ALEC—not me.
In addition to his leadership as State Chair, Rep. Murphy actively participates in the ALEC Education and Workforce Task Force and the Commerce, Insurance, and Economic Development Task Force. Through this engagement, he draws on best practices from across the states and applies them to his work in Missouri, strengthening his effectiveness as a legislator.
Rep. Murphy’s leadership demonstrates how early engagement, collaboration, and sustained participation strengthen legislative outcomes. His continued involvement ensures Missouri remains an active, connected, and forward-looking voice within the ALEC network.
Congratulations, Rep. Jim Murphy!
