State Legislator of the Month, March 2024: Kansas Sen. Renee Erickson

We are delighted to announce Kansas State Senator Renee Erickson as the March 2024 State Legislator of the Month. Senator Erickson serves as the ALEC Co-Chair for Kansas and holds the position of Assistant Majority Whip in the Kansas Senate. Always eager to step up and collaborate with fellow legislators, coupled with her dedication to representing the interests of her constituents in Wichita, Kansas, makes her a truly deserving recipient of this award.

The State Legislator of the Month award highlights successes and acknowledges those who personify the principles at the core of ALEC – limited government, free markets, and federalism.

Erickson’s leadership during Women’s History Month is also noteworthy. She championed a resolution last year that honors women throughout March, showcasing her dedication to recognizing the milestones and contributions made by women throughout the years.

Erickson’s exceptional leadership extends to her proactive efforts in rallying her colleagues to engage with ALEC. She has played a pivotal role in bringing a significant delegation to our conferences, ensuring that her peers are well-informed and actively participating in discussions on critical issues. Furthermore, Erickson has been instrumental in involving her colleagues in ALEC academies, providing them with valuable opportunities for learning, collaboration, and professional development. Her dedication to fostering meaningful engagement within ALEC exemplifies her commitment to advancing our shared principles and enhancing legislative leadership in the states.

In her own words, Erickson expresses the value of her involvement with ALEC:

“If I could only belong to one organization as a legislator, it would be ALEC because of the shared principles of limited government, free markets, and federalism. Networking and creating friendships with like-minded legislators I continually learn from, serve with on task forces, and share model legislation with is invaluable. Unlike other organizations, access to national experts and high-quality resources are at my disposal year-round. Thank you for fighting for what’s right and supporting legislators!”

Her professional experience spans diverse roles, including teacher, data assessment coordinator, middle school principal, and financial planner, reflecting her multifaceted expertise and commitment to service. Before public service, Erickson pursued an impressive education journey, earning degrees in business administration from Oklahoma Christian University, business education from Wichita State University, a master’s degree in public school administration from Baker University, and family life education and consultation from Kansas State University.

Currently, Erickson chairs four committees, including Commerce, Unemployment Compensation Modernization and Improvement Council, the 2023 Special Committee on Childcare Centers and Childcare Homes, and the 2021 Special Committee on Government Overreach and the Impact of COVID-19 Mandates. She is the Vice Chair for Education, Public Health and Welfare, the 2021 Special Committee on Federal 340B Drug Program, and the 2022 Special Committee on Workforce Development.

In conclusion, Erickson’s commitment to promoting engagement and collaboration among her colleagues, alongside her responsiveness to her constituents’ concerns, underscores her exceptional leadership. Congratulations, Senator Erickson, on being named the State Legislator of the Month for March!
