ALEC Congratulates Taiwan on the 113th Double Ten Day
Double Ten Day is an annual opportunity to celebrate Taiwan – an extraordinary nation with a very bright future.
ALEC congratulates President Lai Ching-te, Vice President Hsiao Bi-khim, Taiwan’s Ambassador to the United States Alexander Ta-ray Yui, and the Taiwanese people on the 113th National Day of the Republic of China, also known as Double Ten Day!
Read our letter commemorating this special occasion.
As we noted in our letter, Taiwan’s steadfast commitment to rule of law and free market principles is an admirable achievement for any sovereign state, however, Taiwan’s prominence as a global beacon of democracy is especially remarkable given the profound security challenges the nation has faced since its inception.
Despite these challenges, Taiwan continues to shine bright as a beacon of democracy, holding elections marked by a peaceful transfer of power every four years with candidates representing several robust political parties. This year’s election in January was particularly meaningful for ALEC as our good friend, former Ambassador Bi-khim Hsiao, won her bid for the vice presidency.
As Ambassador, she spoke at numerous ALEC events, including our Annual Meeting in Salt Lake City in 2021, where she gave a stirring speech about the importance of likeminded democracies standing together both strategically and economically. She also recorded a special ALEC video to commemorate Women’s History Month.
We were honored when she met with an ALEC delegation in Taipei this August that included incoming ALEC National Chair West Virginia Senator Patricia Rucker, ALEC CEO Lisa B. Nelson and Karla Jones, Sr. Director of Federalism, Homeland Security and International Relations. During the wide-ranging conversation, Vice President Hsiao expressed appreciation for the model policy adopted by our members. ALEC Taiwan-focused model policies are all intended to send a strong message that Taiwan’s sovereignty is inviolable, that Taiwan’s security is non-negotiable, and that strengthening the US-Taiwan partnership is paramount.
Double Ten Day is an annual opportunity to celebrate Taiwan – an extraordinary nation with a very bright future. Congratulations, and ALEC looks forward to observing many Double Ten Days in the years to come!
