Study on Standardized Public-School Designs

Prior to task force meetings, ALEC posts these legislative member-submitted draft model policies to our website. The draft model policies are then discussed, debated, and voted on by ALEC task force members. Policies that receive final approval by legislators on the ALEC Board of Directors become official ALEC model policy. Draft model policies that fail to become official ALEC model policy are removed from the website.

    This model policy requires a state’s Department of Education to conduct a study regarding the standardization of building designs for public schools. Results of the study must then be provided to various elected officials, including the legislature.

    Study on Standardized Public-School Designs

    Section 1. Study Regarding Standardized Building Designs.     

    • (A) The [insert state education authority] shall conduct a study regarding standardizing building designs for public schools.  
    • (B) The study conducted under this section must:  
      1. Determine the feasibility of establishing a set of 10 standardized building designs that a school district must choose from when building a new campus; and  
      2. Evaluate the effective cost savings to individual school districts from providing designs for school districts building a new campus.  

    Section 2. Report.     

    Not later than [insert future date], the [insert state education authority] shall submit a report to the governor, the lieutenant governor, the speaker of the house of representatives, and the chair of each standing committee of the legislature with primary jurisdiction over education that includes the results of the study conducted under this Act.  

    Section 3. Effective date.  

    This Act shall take effect on [insert date].
