Center for International Freedom

Policy Center Description

The ALEC Center for International Freedom connects the ALEC mission of promoting limited government, free markets, and federalism to the rest of the world. Representative democracy is the most effective governing system to protect societal and individual freedoms, and the Center works to ensure support for democracy does not erode globally. The Center empowers leaders in nations where freedom is under threat, and develops policy resources that champion international liberty.

The Center continues the work of the ALEC Task Force on International Relations, Homeland Security, and Federalism. ALEC members have introduced Victims of Communism legislation in their legislative chambers; condemned human rights violations against Chinese minorities such as the Uyghurs; highlighted the elimination of democratic processes in Hong Kong; honored Ukraine as they defend against Russia’s efforts to dominate, intimidate, and conquer; offered rapid support for Israel while condemning Hamas in the wake of the October 7, 2023 attack; and defended the sovereignty of Taiwan in the face of PRC aggression.

Intuitively attuned to the importance of representative government, the Center educates Americans and lawmakers around the world on the importance of rule of law, strong democratic institutions, and civil society. The Center champions economic freedom and free trade as the key to exporting democratic values to the international community.
