ALEC Policy Champions Secure the Integrity of the Vote in Ohio

Congratulations to Sen. Theresa Gavarone and Sen. William P. DeMora for their success in securing Ohio’s elections.

ALEC is honored to recognize Ohio State Sen. Theresa Gavarone and Sen. William P. DeMora for their leadership in the passage of SB63, ensuring fair vote counting practices by prohibiting Ranked-Choice Voting (RCV) in Ohio and strengthening election integrity for all Ohioans.

SB63 aligns with the ALEC model policy, The One Citizen, One Vote Act, featured in Essential Policy Solutions for 2026. ALEC members adopted this policy as a response to the problems posed by voting systems like RCV, which replaces the straightforward, “the-most-votes-wins” system with a complicated ranking system that many voters find confusing. RCV introduces unnecessary complications, is difficult to audit, and risks disenfranchising the very people it claims to empower. ALEC submitted expert testimony on SB63 while it was under consideration, highlighting the risks to election integrity posed by RCV.

Ohio is the second state this legislative session to take this important step to secure elections, following Indiana. They join 17 other states that passed bans in recent years.

Thanks to the leadership of Sen. DeMora and ALEC member Sen. Gavarone, Ohioans can be confident that that it will be easy to vote and hard to cheat in their state.
