ALEC Policy Champions Advance Election Integrity In Ohio
Congratulations to Sen. Jane M. Timken and Sen. Theresa Gavarone for taking an important step toward protecting the integrity of Ohio’s elections.
ALEC is honored to recognize Sen. Jane M. Timken and Sen. Theresa Gavarone as ALEC Policy Champions for their leadership and initiative in bringing S.J.R. 10 to Ohio voters in November. This proposed amendment to the Ohio Constitution would strengthen election integrity by constitutionally requiring voter identification, helping ensure that Ohio’s elections remain secure, transparent, and worthy of public confidence.
S.J.R. 10 closely aligns with Section A of ALEC’s model policy, the Valid Voter Identification Act, by requiring voters to present valid photo identification when voting in person and by identifying acceptable forms of photo ID.
Ohio law already requires an elector appearing at a polling place to provide photo identification. However, S.J.R. 10 seeks to enshrine this existing safeguard in the state constitution by placing voter identification requirements before Ohioans as a proposed amendment. If approved by voters, the amendment would protect photo identification requirements for in-person voting and minimum identification standards for other methods of voting from future statutory changes, ensuring that these election integrity protections remain durable, consistent, and accountable to the people of Ohio.
This makes Ohio one of five states where voters are scheduled to consider voter identification ballot measures in 2026, alongside California, Nevada, North Carolina, and Oklahoma.
Thanks to the leadership of Sen. Jane M. Timken and Sen. Theresa Gavarone, Ohioans will have the opportunity this November to strengthen public confidence in their elections by supporting a constitutional safeguard for voter identification.
