Education Freedom with Mesha Mainor at the ALEC 51st Annual Meeting

A space where legislators receive information to tackle pressing issues in their states.

Denver, CO – Georgia State Representative Mesha Mainor recently shared her insights at the 51st Annual Meeting of the American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC) in Denver, Colorado. Marking her second year as an ALEC member, where she shared insights on critical issues affecting her community and discussed how the resources of ALEC are helping her address these challenges in Georgia. As a representative for the people of downtown Atlanta, she revels in the hope provided by the Georgia Promise Scholarship as she continues her commitment to advancing education freedom.

Championing Education Freedom in Georgia

As a leading voice in ALEC’s Education Freedom Alliance, she expressed the importance of expanding educational opportunities for students in her district.

“In my district, we have schools where only 2% to 3% of the kids are at math or reading proficiency,” Mainor said. “That means 97% to 98% of kids are not reading or performing math at proficiency level. That’s why school choice is very important to me.”

The Georgia Promise Scholarship, a key initiative in the state, was a significant topic during the past legislative year. Mainor emphasized that while progress has been made, there is still work to be done. Thanks to the insights gained from ALEC colleagues across the country, she hopes to leverage those lessons to further improve education in Georgia.

The Value of ALEC Resources

Mainor also spoke highly of the ALEC conference, emphasizing the benefits it provides to legislators. She highlighted the availability of model policies, which can be adapted and implemented in various states, allowing for immediate application of the ideas discussed at the conference. Encouraged other legislators to attend ALEC meetings, she noted the value of the friendships and professional networks developed over the past year.

“This conference is really a space where you are able as a legislator to take back information that you can immediately use from their model policies,” she told us. “Take it to your legislative body and they will put it in the print to match the needs for your particular state and communities.”

As Mainor looks ahead to her continued work in Georgia, she remains focused on using the knowledge and connections gained at ALEC to drive positive change in her community. We can only begin to imagine what year three will bring.
