In the News: Lisa B. Nelson Discusses How States Fared During COVID-19 on Save the Nation
Last week, ALEC CEO Lisa B. Nelson joined the Sunday show circuit alongside economist Stephen Moore and FreedomWorks president Adam Brandon on Save the Nation. They discussed how states are faring economically on the back end of the COVID-19 pandemic.
“We have a lot to learn from what we’ve been through in the last year and a half,” said Nelson. “I would say there are a few states who have really shined.”
Nelson highlighted Florida and North Dakota as leading prosperity states throughout the pandemic, as Governor DeSantis, Governor Noem and their states’ legislatures prioritized keeping opportunity open for their people. Nelson also notes the consequences of Governor Cuomo’s strict and heavy hand to New York’s economy and its residents’ livelihoods.
In partnership with Steve Moore, Dr. Arthur B Laffer and Donna Arduin, ALEC recently published a report on America’s 50 Governors. Among the many metrics of analysis, Governors were ranked on their COVID-19 responses. Download the report here.
Nelson went on to emphasize the crucial role federalism played in the pandemic response.
“We learned a lot through this year, and listening to people in Washington [D.C.] telling us what to do out in the states isn’t the answer.”
