The Untold Story of the Midterms and a Policy Preview for 2023: Lee Schalk on KWTO Radio

Lee Schalk, ALEC Vice President of Policy, joined host Tim Jones of KWTO Radio in Springfield, MO to discuss midterms ballot measure results and offer a preview of what to expect from legislatures across the states in 2023.

One of the trends that we’re seeing on a bipartisan basis is this principle of transparency — from education to health care to taxation. On education, what is being taught in our classrooms. In healthcare — when you receive a hospital bill, there needs to be transparency with what you’re being charged for and how it’s calculated. With property taxes, it’s important to pull back the curtain and understand why our property taxes seem to go up year after year.

ALEC has model policy on each of these: Academic Transparency Act, Hospital Price Transparency Act, Truth in Taxation Act.

Americans are still suffering from high inflation as a result of excessive government spending coming from Washington, D.C. Many states are looking at what they can do to lower taxes and bring relief to Americans. Last year five states, Iowa, Arizona, Georgia, Mississippi, and Idaho adopted a flat tax. States want to be more competitive, as well as give their people more relief, so in this new year, tax reform will to be a top priority in many states.
