States Created the Federal Government, Not the Other Way Around: Lee Schalk on The Voice of Reason

The real policy solutions are coming from state capitals, not Washington, DC.

Lee Schalk, ALEC Vice President of Policy, spoke with Andy Hooser on The Voice of Reason to discuss 2024 priorities for state legislators regarding state budgets, school choice, AI, and more.

The beauty of how our founders created the United States of America rests in the principle of federalism. Let’s not forget that states created the federal government, not the other way around. The more we can transfer that balance of power back to the states as our Founders intended to better.

At my organization, ALEC, we have the privilege of working with principled free market, limited government-minded legislators from across the country.

The other great thing about ALEC is that they’re constantly bringing their ideas to us and sharing them with fellow ALEC members – what’s working and what’s not. We’re able to quickly see from the 50 laboratories of democracy, what can be done to help Americans who, let’s be honest, are suffering. We’re all suffering under this permanent tax known as inflation. It’s a great place to start to understand how to implement pro-growth tax reform, for example, helping Americans keep more of their hard-earned paychecks. I think it’s a great starting point for all of us.
