ALEC Announces Launch of Education Freedom Alliance

New coalition aims to expand education freedom and opportunity for all.

Arlington, VA – Continuing the momentum of National School Choice Week, the American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC) is proud to announce the launch of the Education Freedom Alliance (EFA), a coalition of like-minded organizations supporting the rights of parents to choose the option that best fits their child’s unique educational needs.

“We have learned to embrace innovation in our everyday lives while still clinging to an education system that holds fast to the past,” said ALEC CEO Lisa B. Nelson. “It is time we apply the same evolutionary spark that created iPhones and Teslas to the classroom through new methods, new lessons, and new platforms that allow all to thrive. EFA opens a gateway to that possibility by providing one simple thing – choice.”

Created to help improve (not dismantle) our country’s education system, the Education Freedom Alliance believes that education dollars can and should follow the student, not the system. By embracing this approach, the EFA coalition seeks to expand parental rights and education freedom on behalf of all parents and students. The Alliance plays a key role in ALEC’s 25 by ‘25 initiative to bring education freedom to 25 states by 2025. Currently, 10 states boast universal education freedom policies.

“Education freedom benefits everyone – the states, the schools, the parents, and the students,” said ALEC Education and Workforce Development Task Force Director Andrew Handel. “Parents deserve options – whether it’s public school, private school, charter school, home school, or virtual school. It’s difficult to understand why some refuse to allow these kids to be the best they can be.”

Led by the American Legislative Exchange Council, Committee to Unleash Prosperity, and the Job Creators Network, the growing list of coalition partners includes Americans for Prosperity, EdChoice, The Heritage Foundation, Parents Defending Education, and yes. every kid.

“We have a wonderful collection of highly reputable partners focused on one simple task – providing America’s students with the best education possible. While that may mean different things for different families, we’re here to ensure that their children won’t be left behind in the name of political obstinance,” Nelson concluded.
