Statement Celebrating the Arrest of Nicolás Maduro
Arlington, VA – The American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC) released the following statement celebrating the capture of Venezuelan dictator Nicholás Maduro:
ALEC celebrates the arrest of Nicolás Maduro, a murderous dictator, whose removal offers Venezuela the opportunity to restore democratic governance and spur economic growth. We applaud President Donald Trump’s decisive action, ALEC Alumnus and U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio’s bold leadership in advancing this mission, and the U.S. Army Delta Force’s ability to project power anywhere in the world.
Indicted by the U.S. Department of Justice in 2020, Maduro terrorized Venezuelans while bankrupting the oil and mineral-rich nation. His rule brought famine, the flight of almost 25% of Venezuela’s population, and stratospheric inflation. Embracing free market principles and rebuilding extractive industry infrastructure will be key to Venezuela’s restoration as a self-sufficient, democratic nation.
“The successful capture of Nicolás Maduro demonstrates America’s commitment to peace through strength and justice at the highest level —delivering a powerful message to the world that tyranny will not go unchallenged in the Western Hemisphere,” said ALEC Chief Executive Officer Lisa B. Nelson. “While radicals like the New York City Mayor oppose the White House at every turn, President Trump continues to prioritize national security, American values, and the rule of law.”
“I am thankful that a murderer and illegal dictator will face justice, thankful no American forces were hurt, and thankful for the opportunity to realize freedom again in Venezuela,” said ALEC 2025 National Chair and West Virginia Senate Assistant Majority Leader Patricia Rucker. “Venezuelans will transition and elect a democratic President and run themselves.”
“America should reward Venezuelan courage in trying to oust the Maduro regime at the ballot box despite brutal crackdowns on dissent by empowering the leaders they elected – most notably María Corina Machado and Edmundo González – or will elect in the future,” observed Karla Jones, Vice President of the ALEC Center for International Freedom. “The remaining Chavistas, including interim President Delcy Rodriguez, must be replaced to maintain American credibility. Our 250th anniversary as a global beacon for liberty is a fitting occasion to facilitate Venezuela’s democratic transition.”
