Anti-Carbon Tax Resolution Passes House of Representatives

ALEC’s Energy, Environment, and Agriculture Task Force has clear model policy language for state lawmakers looking to reflect Congress’ resolution.

The House of Representatives voted on Thursday to approve House Concurrent Resolution 86, Expressing the sense of Congress that a carbon tax would be detrimental to the United States economy. Introduced by Congressman Ryan Zinke (R-MT) with 21 cosponsors, the resolution highlights the insidious costs associated with taxing America’s most reliable and affordable electricity generating technologies.

Carbon tax would raise the cost of heating homes in the winter and cooling during the scorching summer months, leading to more than discomfort. With many states ramping up pressure for homeowners to turn to electrification, or electricity-only heating and cooling solutions, power grid issues are a life-or-death issue for older or more vulnerable citizens.

The resolution also points out that carbon taxes will raise the cost of transportation, other home heating options, and ultimately, the price of food. In ALEC’s latest Energy Affordability Report, we take a look at how most of the highest cost states in the nation for electricity participate in some variation of a carbon tax scheme.

Carbon taxes increase the cost of everything Americans buy, essentially lowering Americans’ effective take home pay, while increasing the intrusiveness of the government in every facet of our lives.

“Nobody does energy cleaner, better, safer and cheaper than we do it here in the United States,” Zinke said in a statement when introducing the resolution. “A carbon tax is harder on everyone from the energy producer to farmers to the American consumer already digging to the bottom of their pockets trying to afford Biden’s inflation. American energy producers are constantly innovating and making production both more efficient and with fewer emissions.”

Congressman Zinke also rightly notes that by bowing to the whims of those who want to upend America’s ability to supply its own energy needs domestically, we would be subject to the whims of not-always-friendly foreign powers.

ALEC’s Energy, Environment, and Agriculture Task Force has clear model policy language for state lawmakers looking to reflect Congress’ resolution. Our Resolution In Opposition to a Carbon Tax highlights that these taxes will cause serious harm to people and industries while making not even a negligible impact on global emissions.

Congratulations to Congressman Zinke in his bipartisan win in the House of Representatives.
